Telegram Stock Tips vs SEBI-Registered Research: Red FlagsMost Telegram stock tips come from people who are not registered with SEBI. A SEBI-registered research analyst has an INH registration number you can check on SEBI's list, must back each call with research, cannot promise assured profits, and must give you a way to complain. Here are the red flags and the checks to run before you pay. ![]() Last updated: 21 October 2026 To check if a stock tip on Telegram or WhatsApp comes from a SEBI-registered research analyst, find the sender's SEBI registration number (it starts with INH), search it on SEBI's official list of Research Analysts, and confirm that the name and contact details match the channel. A genuine registered analyst must show its registration number, back every recommendation with research, avoid any promise of assured profits and give you a grievance route. Most anonymous Telegram tipsters do none of this. You can begin with Finuro's free directory of SEBI-registered research analysts and then confirm the entry on sebi.gov.in. Registered analysts also use Telegram and WhatsApp to deliver their research, so the app itself is not the problem. The question is who is behind the channel and whether they are accountable to SEBI. What is the difference between a Telegram tip and SEBI-registered research?Under the SEBI (Research Analysts) Regulations, 2014, giving buy, sell or hold recommendations, price targets, stop-loss targets, trading calls or model portfolios for a fee counts as "research services". Anyone providing them for consideration must be registered with SEBI as a research analyst. Here is how the two compare in practice. What red flags should you look for in a stock tips group? In a May 2025 press release, SEBI warned that scammers send unsolicited links to "VIP" WhatsApp groups and free trading courses, create fake expert profiles, impersonate SEBI-registered intermediaries and well-known people, and show fake testimonials from group members who are part of the scam. Watch for these signs. Assured or "guaranteed" profitsAssured or guaranteed profit schemes are prohibited. Registered RAs may not advertise target returns, percentage accuracy or service "until the target is achieved". Unsolicited invites to VIP or premium groupsYou were added to a group you never joined, or a stranger sent you a link promising "institutional" or insider-style calls. No registration number, or one that does not matchThe channel shows no INH number, or SEBI's list shows a different name, city or contact person for that number. Profit screenshots and testimonialsScreenshots are easy to fake. SEBI's advertising code bars RAs from using misleading testimonials or unverified past performance claims. Payment to a personal accountYou are asked to pay an individual's UPI ID, a wallet or an account whose name differs from the registered entity. Requests for logins, OTPs or money to investA registered RA will never ask for your trading, demat or bank login or OTP, and SEBI tells investors not to give funds for investment to a research analyst. Urgency on small, thinly traded stocksPressure to buy a little-known stock "before it runs" is a classic pump-and-dump pattern, where promoters of the tip sell once others buy. The SEBI logo on bannersRegistered RAs are not allowed to use the SEBI logo. Its presence on a channel's display picture is a warning sign, not a badge of trust. How do you check if a Telegram channel is run by a registered analyst?
What does a message from a registered analyst usually include?SEBI requires RAs to show key details in reports and other correspondence with clients. A message or report from a registered RA's paid channel will typically carry:
Missing details do not prove a scam on their own, but taken with other red flags they should stop you from paying. Are registered analysts allowed to share past performance?Only in limited ways. SEBI's advertisement code bars RAs from referring to past performance or risk-return metrics unless they are verified by a Past Risk and Return Verification Agency (PaRRVA) and presented in the manner SEBI specifies. Under an interim arrangement, RAs may share past performance certified by a chartered accountant or cost accountant only on a client's specific request, one-to-one and with a prescribed disclaimer, not on public channels. So a channel that posts daily "95% accuracy" banners or public profit tables is not following these rules, whoever runs it. Can registered analysts promote their services through Telegram influencers? No. Since SEBI's August 2024 amendments, entities regulated by SEBI and their agents must not have any direct or indirect association with a person who gives securities advice or recommendations without being registered or permitted, or who makes claims of returns or performance without permission. If an unregistered "influencer" says they are partnered with a registered analyst, treat that as a red flag for both. What should you do if a Telegram tipster misled you?Stop paying and keep evidenceDo not send further money, however the request is framed. Save screenshots of the channel, messages, payment requests, UPI transaction IDs and bank statements. If money was taken by fraudContact your bank straight away, and report cyber fraud on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (cybercrime.gov.in) or the 1930 helpline. If the person is not registeredReport the entity to SEBI through its Market Intelligence (MI) portal, which is listed on SEBI's investor website. If the person is a registered RARaise a written complaint with the RA first. If it is not resolved, escalate on SEBI's SCORES platform and then through SMART ODR. See how to complain against a research analyst on SCORES. The rules described here reflect SEBI's regulations and circulars as of October 2026.
