Why Payment Gateways Reject Stock Market Advisory Businesses (and How to Get Paid)Payment gateways often reject stock market advisory businesses because their merchant terms treat stock market and financial services as high risk. A SEBI-registered research analyst improves the odds with a registration certificate, a compliant website, clear refund terms and accurate declarations, and must still collect fees within SEBI's rules. ![]() Last updated: 21 October 2026 Payment gateways reject or hold many stock market advisory businesses because their own merchant terms treat the category as high risk. Cashfree's terms list "Stock market" and "Financial Services" among high-risk categories, and Razorpay's prohibited list has broad catch-alls for securities-related products, get-rich-quick schemes and anything the partner bank sees as a risk to its image. Unregistered tip sellers have made the category prone to complaints and chargebacks. A SEBI-registered research analyst (RA) cannot change the category, but can show the gateway a business that is clearly registered, transparent and low in disputes. This guide covers what the gateways' policies say, which documents help, and how to collect fees within SEBI's rules. You can then set up subscription billing and payment collection for your research service. This article is general information, not legal advice. Gateway policies change without notice, so read each gateway's current merchant terms, and check the current SEBI rules before you change how you collect fees. Why do payment gateways reject stock market advisory businesses?A payment aggregator has to answer to its partner banks and card networks for every merchant it onboards. Stock market advisory sits close to several risk patterns they screen for. The category is listed as high riskCashfree's merchant terms have a "Risky Categories" list of segments treated as high risk "either due to the laws and regulations around their industries, or the levels of transactions they process monthly". It includes Financial Services, Stock market, Mutual funds and Forex. Broad catch-all prohibitionsRazorpay's prohibited list includes "Securities which include government bonds or related financial products", get-rich-quick schemes, and any product or service that the partner or acquiring bank, in its sole opinion, finds detrimental to its image and interests. Your website is checkedCashfree's terms say it may use third-party tools to crawl the merchant site to identify high-risk keywords and verify the declared line of business. A page full of "jackpot calls" will be read as a red flag. Disputes, refunds and reversalsRazorpay may suspend services and settlements if it sees pending, anticipated or excessive disputes, refunds or reversals, or transactions with a high risk score in its fraud tools. A mismatch with what you declaredRazorpay may also suspend a merchant that changes the type of products or services declared at onboarding without permission, or that gave misleading information about them. What do Razorpay's and Cashfree's policies actually say?Neither gateway's terms name "research analyst" or "stock tips" as a banned business. The risk comes from how the broad wording is applied by the gateway and its banks. Which documents help a SEBI RA get approved? Each gateway sets its own document list, so ask for it at the start. These are the items that most directly show you are a regulated business. What gets an advisory website flagged? Many of the phrases that worry a gateway's risk team are also prohibited in RA advertisements under SEBI's advertisement code. Remove them before you apply:
See our guide to the SEBI advertisement code for RAs for the full list. How must an RA collect fees under SEBI rules?Whichever gateway you use, SEBI's fee rules still apply. The points below are from the Master Circular for Research Analysts dated 6 February 2026. No fee before consentPara 1.12(b) says no research service may be rendered and no fee charged until the client has consented to your terms and conditions. Specified payment modes, no cashThe MITC lists modes such as cheque, online bank transfer and UPI, says cash is not allowed, and names the optional Centralised Fee Collection Mechanism (CeFCoM) run by BSE. Confirm with your compliance adviser how card and gateway payments fit this wording. Validated UPI IDsSEBI's circular of 11 June 2025 requires registered intermediaries to collect investor payments through standardised, validated UPI IDs with the @valid handle. Fee limits and advance feesFor individual and HUF clients the limit is ₹1,51,000 per family per year. Para 1.9(f) allows advance fees for up to one year, while the MITC text still says one quarter, so check the current position before you set billing cycles. Our guide to RA fee limits and payment rules covers refunds and the family limit in more detail. What should you do if your application is rejected?
