How to Start a Paid Telegram Channel Legally as a SEBI RATo run a paid Telegram channel legally, you need SEBI registration as a research analyst. Then onboard each member with KYC and consent to your terms and MITC before charging, collect fees within SEBI's limits through permitted modes, add disclosures to every call, follow the advertisement code and keep records for five years. ![]() Last updated: 21 October 2026 To start a paid Telegram channel legally in India, you first need SEBI registration as a research analyst (RA), because charging for buy, sell or hold calls on securities is a research service. Once registered and enlisted with RAASB, you must complete KYC for each paying member, get their consent to your terms and MITC before taking any fee, collect fees only through permitted modes within SEBI's fee limits, put the required disclosures on every recommendation, follow the advertisement code when you promote the channel, and keep records for five years. The Telegram group is only the delivery channel. A tool for running paid Telegram and WhatsApp channels for SEBI RAs helps you add members only after payment. This guide walks through each step in order. It is a summary of SEBI rules as of October 2026, not legal advice. Check the current SEBI regulations, master circular and RAASB guidance before you launch. Do you need SEBI registration to run a paid Telegram channel?Yes, if the channel gives recommendations or opinions on securities for a fee. The SEBI (Research Analysts) Regulations, 2014 cover anyone who provides research services for consideration, and the regulations make no exception for Telegram, WhatsApp or other messaging apps. Running a paid stock calls channel without registration is the activity SEBI's investor warnings target. Registration routeYou apply in Form A through the Research Analyst Administration and Supervisory Body (RAASB, currently BSE), which scrutinises the application and recommends it to SEBI. Qualification and certificationIndividual RAs need the qualification and NISM certification set out in the regulations. See our guide to becoming a SEBI research analyst for the full eligibility list. Free channels are not exempt from every ruleA free public channel where you, as an RA, discuss securities is public media. Regulation 21 requires you to disclose your registration status and any financial interest in the company you talk about. What does it cost to set up?SEBI's own fees are listed in the FAQs annexed to the RA master circular. RAASB charges separate administrative fees, so check its current schedule. You must also keep a deposit with RAASB based on your number of clients: Paid members of your channel count as clients, so the deposit rises as the channel grows. How do you onboard paying members legally? The order matters. SEBI's master circular says no research service may be given and no fee charged until the client has consented to your terms. 1. KYCRegulation 25 and para 1.13 of the master circular require KYC records for fee-paying clients. A Telegram username is not KYC; collect PAN and check KRA records. 2. Terms, MITC and consentDisclose your terms and conditions, including the Most Important Terms and Conditions (MITC), and take consent. Aadhaar-based e-sign is one of the accepted modes. 3. PaymentCollect the fee only after consent, through permitted modes, and issue an invoice. 4. Add to the channelSend the invite only after the first three steps are done, and remove the member when the subscription ends. Our post on client KYC and KRA onboarding for RAs goes deeper on step 1. What are the fee and payment rules? For individual and HUF clients who are not accredited investors, the master circular of 6 February 2026 sets these rules:
See subscription billing for research analysts for setting up plans and recurring payments, and our guide to RA fee limits and payment rules. What disclosures do channel messages need? Each recommendation in a paid channel is research you provide to clients, so the RA Regulations' disclosure rules apply to it as they would to a report. The research report disclosures checklist lists what each recommendation must say. How can you promote a paid channel?Promotional posts, including the teaser messages in a free channel that push people to the paid one, are advertisements under SEBI's advertisement code for RAs. They need prior approval from RAASB and must carry the standard warning. They must not promise returns, quote accuracy percentages, show unverified past performance or use testimonials. Past performanceOnly performance verified by a Past Risk and Return Verification Agency may be advertised. SEBI recognised CARE Ratings as a PaRRVA in April 2026, with regular services from 4 May 2026. Finfluencers and channel promotersYou must not be associated with anyone who gives securities advice without registration or makes unpermitted performance claims. SEBI's FAQs say association includes payments and client referrals, so paying an unregistered tips channel to promote yours is not allowed. What changes in 2027The SEBI (Intermediaries) (Second Amendment) Regulations, 2026, notified on 8 October 2026, add a common advertisement code. It comes into force on the 180th day after Gazette publication, around April 2027. It bans testimonials and dark patterns and restricts celebrity and influencer endorsements. Read our guide to the SEBI advertisement code for RAs before you run a launch campaign. What records must you keep?Regulation 25 lists the records an RA must keep, and all of them must be preserved for at least five years. For a paid channel that means:
Telegram chat history is not a dependable archive. Keep your own dated copy of every message you send. What should you avoid?
